This item is a waste of time & money. It wont fit the 1.25 inch bike rack unless you drill the hole on the bike rack to 1/2 inch. When I did that the bike rack wobbles. Even worse, because the locking hitch is not a single forged section (not the end with the key lock) mine came apart when I arrived home after a short trip. Save your money & get a long cable or chain lock to deter the casual thief.

I bought this because I was told by someone at the R. A. Allen Co. that this would work with their Bike Rack, model 440RR. It turns out that I was lied to or was given an answer by someone who did not know anything. It does NOT work with Allen's own bike rack!!!!! The cylinder is too thick (i.e. the diameter of the cylinder is too wide) to fit through the hitch insert hole.



This item will NOT work with Allen Bike Racks and company will not return your phone call or help you in any way!!!!! (I called them twice and left two messages with an Alex, who has never returned my phone call.)



I will never buy another item from the R. A. Allen Co. again.

I ordered this product based on the picture and part number and expected the same design that I already have except the one I have is threaded.



So you know, they changed the design of the protective key hole cover from hard plastic to rubber. Although this wouldn't seem like a big deal, it is.



When it was inserted into the bike rack hole I used it on, it would not allow me to turn the rubber end piece to cover the key hole. Heck, even with the hitch pin in my hand and not on the bike rack I could not rotate the cap. You have to slide it off to turn it, but this wasn't possible when inserted into the rack.



The old version is made to make a quarter turn and has small raised bumps on the cap that allow you to grip it and turn it with very little effort.



I returned this version and was able to find the old design with the hard plastic cap on another site and bought that. Very satisfied with my hitch pin now.

The hitch pin doesn't work with the Thule bike rack that I bought it for. It's too thick, and I have doubts that it would fit other racks. I may drill out the rack so that it can fit though as it seems like a reasonably well made pin for the price.

This product is so simple, what could go wrong?



Well, like another reviewer here, the included nut seized up on the pin the very first time I installed it, and as a result, there is no way to get the bike rack off of my vehicle. And I can't figure a way to cut it off because the design of the bike rack and my car's hitch leaves no way to get a hacksaw in or maneuver it. So this product has already cost me hours of grief and inconvenience -- and I STILL can't figure out how to get it off.



The manufacturer is supposed to be sending me a new pin, but that won't do me any good until I figure out how to get this one off -- and I'm out of ideas. I'm hoping I can get one of the ends to snap off but haven't been successful so far.



If you buy this product, do NOT use the locknut with the plastic insert which is provided. Go to the hardware store and buy a regular old nut (which can be easily removed) and use that. So long as you're using the locking shaft behind the nut, there's no way it can back off the pin, and you won't have to endure all the grief I'm going through.



One star - a product that creates far more problems than it solves is not a good product.

The item arrived with the box compromised, but as mentioned by others, when I opened it, everything was fine. It took less than a half hour to install on my 2008 Toyoto Highlander equipped with a Reese 2" hitch. I purchased the Allen Universal Stainless Steel Locking Hitch Pin for 2-Inch or 1 1/4-Inch Receiver Hitches to use with this. I bought my wife a bicycle several years ago since she said she never had one as a child. But she very rarely used it because she was afraid of riding in the street. I purchased this product with the intent of carrying our bikes to bike paths and/or trails which I hoped would get her to ride the bike. We took a one week vacation to Hilton Head Island the last week of 2008. We drove from Columbia, SC to Hilton Head Island, SC (almost 3 hours) and used the carrier. It was easy to mount the bikes and they were very secure. The unit itself is very substantially made and the appears to be just as well made as other carriers costing 2 or 3 times more. I would highly recommend this carrier. By the way, my wife really enjoyed riding her bike on the bike paths and now wants us to go riding together several times a month on the local trails. So all in all, this was a great purchase!

Pros:

The bike rack was easy to install. I could've done it myself, but having another set of hands really helped hold it in place while I adjusted the straps.

The rack went on the back of my mini-van just fine with the padding hitting the back hatch exactly where it should, and I experienced no damage to the vehicle.

It went on in 10 minutes.



Cons:

The straps don't really hold the bike stationary on the rack. We used a bungee cord to get it situated nice and tight.

My "girl" bike took some figuring out so it didn't wind up nearly perpendicular to the ground.

I don't think it'll hold three bikes unless they're slim racing bikes.



Overall, glad I bought it, and I would highly recommend it (and an extra bungee cord or two).

I just upgraded to this after having to return the 2-bike rack due to the fact that with an infant seat on one of my bikes it was almost impossible to fit two bikes. On the second outing with this 3 bike rack, the locking mechanism that holds the rack vertical broke. Luckily, I had attached another strap around both bikes to the main frame, keeping them from hitting the highway. Needless to say, I will be returning this and looking for a better built rack. If you get this rack, ALWAYS use another strap so you won't have to rely on the velcro straps alone should something happen to the rack while in transit.

This rack works great, I use it on my Cadillac sedan at highway speeds so I can vouch for it's safety/rigidity . The install was pretty straight forward with the straps being labeled, and each dock that touches the vehicle is wrapped in non-abrasive foam so that you wont scratch your car or truck. Also the holsters for each bike uses heavy duty velcro so that it fits a variety of frame styles. For example my bike is a Mongoose Snare ([...]) with a pretty 'original' skeleton which I managed to secure with a bit of convincing. I'd definitely recommend this to a friend or family member 5stars!!

This is the first bike rack I own, so I can't compare to others, but the design of the straps is not exactly the best design to secure and adjust to support the weight of 3 adult mountain bikes. It is easy to mount and I like the security lock. I purchased an additional cargo strap to ensure it secures the rack properly to the vehicle and can handle the weight on bumpy roads. It probably won't need that with lighter race bikes or children bikes.

For the amount I paid for this, I wasn't expecting a perfectly crafted high-end bike rack. I have a Toyota Matrix, fitting to the back hatch is a little tricky, but it is perfect for what I need/expected. I would be nervous putting more than 2 bikes on it, the straps seem to loosen up pretty easily (again, not high end), and I find myself tightening them every day (whether we've had bikes on the rack or not). I have had it on my car continuously for 3 weeks now, and it has made toting around my teenager's BMX bike much more pleasant (and the dog appreciates having the back seat to himself!)

I'm using this rack because its not worth the hassle of trying to return it to Target. Perhaps the rack would be worth 5 stars if didn't come with a manufacturer's defect. I had to bend the metal plates open so that they could receieve and lock the arms in place. I still don't have a perfect fit and worry about the arms giving out. So far it is holding one bike up very well but with my next purchase I'll go inspect the rack before purchasing.
