I bought this for my 2009 Jeep Wrangler and with the standard size spare tire on the trunk can only be opened about 6 inches because the thing doesn't drop low enough, but aside from that the thing's great, very sturdy and seems like it will hold up all right.

I purchase the rack because it looked similar to one I had several years ago. Overall, it is simple to attach to the car and appears quite stable. It folds up relatively small and fits in the trunk when not in use. One minor problem is the it does not accomodate women's bicycles very well. Also the placeholders for the bicycles seem to be designed for racing bikes and do not accomodate cruisers very well. It would have been better to leave the bar smooth to provide more flexibility in terms of placing the bicycles on the rack. The most substantial complaint is that the descriptions indicated that it fit on virtually any trunk. However, the box and the instructions indicated it was only designed to fit over the spare tire of SUVs. Putting it on the trunk does not appear to be a problem, but the sellers should be clearer about this. Overall, though it is a good rack for the price.

The rack works fine. Everything was pre-assembled,which is good because I'm not mechanically inclined.It took about 10-15 minutes to adjust the 2 upper straps to my Crown Vic (2001) so the rack wouldn't slip or move while in use.

The product is very good for the price. However, when I wanted to use it with my Dodge Grand Caravan, The pieces were not able to match. I did use it anyway, but I have to drive slower than normal to avoid loosing the bikes.

This hitch is HEAVY but well made - sticks out a bit more that other hitches I guess to accommodate a wide range of SUV's but people will be looking at you saying damn that hitch is just sticking out a bit too much especially the drivers behind you. The good: This rack works exactly as advertised. It's all steel and will certainly last many years. The price is the most attractive feature. This is a fraction the cost of the popular name units and performs just as well.



The bad: The thing is heavy. Really heavy. Don't forget to regularly check the tightness of nuts and bolts. A few more lock washers or nylock nuts might be a nice addition. The hitch piece needs to be a couple inches longer to clear the spare tire of a land rover discovery. (Or buy a small hitch extender.) It fits my pickup fine.



The ugly: Some of the welds look a little rough. Nothing that would compromise the ability to carry a few bikes, but it's certainly not perfect. The powder coat finish isn't the most durable. After a couple summers riding on the back of the wifes land rover it looks a bit faded and scratched.



For the price, I would certainly buy it again if I ever need to replace it.

This bike rack is OK. I feel a little uneasy using it for two bikes as it feels a bit flimsy.



I wish it had some sort of holders for bike frames (The way it is made the holder is just a metal pipe). Also, I think the tie is too short to secure TWO bikes (one is OK) I would use additional ties to carry two bikes.

I was looking for a cheap but sturdy and easy to use trunk mounted bike rack and this one was great. It's a great value. It easily holds our two bikes and when properly installed on the car shifts very little (some shift is due to the give of the foam interfaces). I have driven with it on the interstate up to 75 miles per hour. It is important to note that the rack will shift more if the bottom strap (leading to under the bumper or under the hatch) is not pulled tight enough to distend the elastic section.



I recommend being careful when installing the rack as the hooks are metal and may damage the finish of the car. However, I have had no damage to mine as of yet by taking care not to allow the hooks to bang or drag across my car. If you are worried about it anyway, you might add a little rubber or foam padding to the hooks.



All in all, this is a great basic bike rack. Not bad at all for under $40.

The product arrived very quickly, and I figured out how to attach it to my car (HHR) in 15 minutes but I did use the "wisdom" I'd seen from other reviews and have made paint protecting pads for the metal clips that hold this thing to the car.

My bike went on easily - I was nervous about tying it down and uncertain if it was going to move while I drove - but it was just fine. I even went on the freeway for a short distance (one exit) - no problems!

We bought this 4 bike carrier to use on our Jeep Wrangler (which, of course, has a rear-mounted spare tire).



Overall the rack is very good. The J-shaped mounting bar has ample automobile clearance - even from large off road spare tires. In my opinion, though, the large horizontal and vertical distance from the rear of the vehicle to the bikes on the rack creates a bit more on-road sway than is necessary.



As a work-around, I secure a nylon strap (left over from an old weed trimmer) between the spare tire and the rack to eliminate in-motion sway.



Again, a very good value for the price - just one small issue that is relatively easy to remedy.

The contstruction and ease of use is very good with a pickup truck. Loved it for the first few years. However, the rubber material that the tube frame of the bike actually rests on does not hold up. I've had mine for a few years but really haven't used it that much and the rubber loops where the straps go through are all coming off. This will eventually lead to the inability to secure the bikes.

This item is a waste of time & money. It wont fit the 1.25 inch bike rack unless you drill the hole on the bike rack to 1/2 inch. When I did that the bike rack wobbles. Even worse, because the locking hitch is not a single forged section (not the end with the key lock) mine came apart when I arrived home after a short trip. Save your money & get a long cable or chain lock to deter the casual thief.

I bought this because I was told by someone at the R. A. Allen Co. that this would work with their Bike Rack, model 440RR. It turns out that I was lied to or was given an answer by someone who did not know anything. It does NOT work with Allen's own bike rack!!!!! The cylinder is too thick (i.e. the diameter of the cylinder is too wide) to fit through the hitch insert hole.



This item will NOT work with Allen Bike Racks and company will not return your phone call or help you in any way!!!!! (I called them twice and left two messages with an Alex, who has never returned my phone call.)



I will never buy another item from the R. A. Allen Co. again.
