We chose this roof mount bike rack because it mounts on almost any rack system, even factory racks with wide oval crossbars. The quality is pretty good for the price, and it has survived a 2800 mile road trip. It takes some time to assemble and install, but mounting the bikes is easy, and it adjusts quickly to various frame sizes. The wheel track comes in two pieces and is not as ridgid as the higher priced racks, but once mounted on the car it seems strong enough. All the hardware is plated steel, so expect some rust unless you keep it in the garage. The only thing we don't like is the nylon web strap that holds the back wheel down. It is hard to tighten and remove, and could blow off when there is no bike attached to the rack. The Thule and Yakima have much better captive ratchet straps for the rear wheel, it is almost worth the the price difference for that alone. I may try to fit some of those ratchet straps on this rack. The cap at the back end of the track is only a pressure fit and prone to falling off. I put a screw through the cap on ours, but you could also glue or tape it on.

This product is probably the best low-cost option. The hardware that comes with it to attach it to your mounting bar could be better. It comes with twist knobs, and was probably a little short for my BMW roof rack. I used the stock mounting for a while, then replaced it with some aluminum bar that fit in the channel of my roof rack. Now it's great! The front fork attachment is sturdy and the back attachment is adequate. It would be nice to replace the back buckle with a velcro strap, but it works. I've driven over 1000 miles on the freeway with my bike on this rack (after making the new mounting system) and it worked very well. For long trips you'll probably want to cover the underside of the front with duct tape to keep the honeycomb structure from whistling in the wind above 65MPH.

This rack is certainly not as feature-laden as racks nearly twice its price. It's made in Asia, and the instructions require flexible interpretation. All that being said, it does this job, is inexpensive, and safely got my bike to its destination 360 miles away. If you go with this, I'd recommend getting a cable or chain lock so you can secure your bike to the roof rack.

I question the universality of this product as I had to be a tad creative to get it to work on my Jetta. The Direction left a good amount to imagination, but in the end it appears I have something that will work with my bike. I do question the efficacy of the design for use with a road bike as this unit appears and from some description to work best with a mountain bike. However, at the end of the day it will securely hold my Fuji to the roof.

This item is a waste of time & money. It wont fit the 1.25 inch bike rack unless you drill the hole on the bike rack to 1/2 inch. When I did that the bike rack wobbles. Even worse, because the locking hitch is not a single forged section (not the end with the key lock) mine came apart when I arrived home after a short trip. Save your money & get a long cable or chain lock to deter the casual thief.

I bought this because I was told by someone at the R. A. Allen Co. that this would work with their Bike Rack, model 440RR. It turns out that I was lied to or was given an answer by someone who did not know anything. It does NOT work with Allen's own bike rack!!!!! The cylinder is too thick (i.e. the diameter of the cylinder is too wide) to fit through the hitch insert hole.



This item will NOT work with Allen Bike Racks and company will not return your phone call or help you in any way!!!!! (I called them twice and left two messages with an Alex, who has never returned my phone call.)



I will never buy another item from the R. A. Allen Co. again.

I bought this so that I can buy larger items at the store and not have to worry if they'll fit in the trunk of my Ford Focus. I recently used it to get some large trash cans home and it worked perfectly. However, I wouldn't recommend this for long trips as it makes a very loud whining/buzzing sound if you drive above 40 mph. It does attach very tightly and securely inside the door frames, so no worries about the rack shifting or falling off. However, the roof of my car is slightly curved and the feet on the rack do not tilt so only one edge of each foot sits on the roof - worries me about putting too much weight up there and it denting the roof. The rubber bottoms of the feet are terrible - they barely attach. If you take the rack off your car you will need to put the rubber bottoms in a bag and attach them to the rack or you will lose them. Overall, it does what I need it to do so I'm satisfied with it.

My family and I, 5 of us, like to head to the beach for the summer. We only own sedans, which makes hauling boogie boards and beach chairs for everyone a bit difficult. Using this carrier along with a "car roof bag" solved the problem. It keeps items off the roof and allows us to bring all of our beach stuff along. It is sturdy and stays in place relatively well. It made a 900 mile round trip without any problems. A previous roof top carrier I owned had one of the legs snap during a trip and scratched up the roof of my car. For some reason it had a flex joint in the legs. The legs on this one is solid and very thick and strong.

I bought this product for my 2009 Scion XB. I wanted to use the roof rack to hold a cargo carrier bag full of stuff to take to the beach. I was skeptical that this roof rack would work since the Scion XB does not have a rain gutter. Other roof racks for the Scion were several hundred dollars and this roof rack was a fraction of the cost. To install the roof rack on the Scion XB, I had to pull down the rubber seal between the door and headliner. I was able to place the hook on the metal between headliner seal. It was simple to do and the hook fit nicely. I was afraid that the installation might damage the door seal, but the door seal snapped back in place after removing the roof rack. I was able to tighten the roof rack bars down so there was no movement at all. I thought I would have to use my ratchet tie-downs but they were not necessary. The cargo bag that I used had about 50 to 60 lbs of stuff tied to the roof rack. I had no problems traveling about 350 miles at 70+ mph. If you plan on using this roof rack to carry a cargo bag, I suggest that use some Duct tape and make sure that any loose straps of the bag are tied down. You should also take a narrow strip of Duct tape and tape down the rubber feet of the roof fact. This will ensure that the rubber feet do not fall off when you are putting the roof rack on your car on a windy day. This roof rack is a great value! The best thing about the roof rack is that it can work on my 2007 Toyota Camry as well!

I just bought this item and was not sure what to expect. First of all, be advised that this is an adapter only that will allow you to mount racks to a factory installed roof rack. The Thule adapter attaches on to most factory roof racks be sure to check the fit guide for compatibility at www.thule.com. I used this adapter to add a pair of Yakima Raptor bike racks to my roof. Yes it worked with Yakima. The only adjustment I had make was to use a hacksaw to saw off some plastic components on the inside edges of the Yakima rack that fold in and out. I assume these were meant to be cut off because they folded back and forth. Leaving them on allows you to mount to a rounded bar and cutting them off adapts them to this bar which is rectangular in shape. In less than 1 hour everything was complete. This item is very afforadable, versatile, and easy to install.

We bought this for a camping trip, 450 miles round trip. It worked like a CHARM. We did stop to check it out a few times, finding that it was secure each time. It's a bit complicated at first to get the straps threaded properly, and I'd definately recommend Super Gluing the rubber feet on after having threaded the straps. Luckily, though we hadn't, we didn't lose any rubber feet. It's quick and easy to install, secure and effective. I definately recommend it. OH.... and I have a Ford Focus... we didn't have ANY problems!!

I used this rack system on my 2005 Honda Odyssey to carry a 20 cubic foot hard shell car top carrier from Hampton Roads, Virginia, to San Diego, California (about 2700 miles). I don't know exactly how much weight I put in the carrier, but it was full of personal baggage (suitcases with clothes, etc). I attached the rack hooks to the track for the sliding door and they did not interfere with the operation of the door. We spent eight days on the trip and drove through two short, but considerable, rain storms. I checked the hooks, brackets and position of the rails at the start and end of each leg of the trip and even with the rain, I never had to adjust or re-tighten them. I was skeptical at first, as I didn't want to try a cheaper product on a long trip. I would have preferred to take a day trip with it first, but the opportunity wasn't available. In the end, the rack met all of the requirements of the long trip and I couldn't be more pleased that I choose this rack over the much more expensive name brands. This is a good product and I wholly recommend it.

Works great to carry a kayak. I have used it twice and it has performed just fine. I install it on my 2008 Toyota Camry and add foam cushions made for transporting a kayak. The hooks attach to the gasket in the doors. I still run straps over the kayak and through the car for extra stability. I incorporated some of the suggestions from other reviewers -- thanks guys.

I bought this rack to fit my 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix so I can haul my 80lb canoe. I didn't want something permanent or have to spend hundreds of dollars. I wanted to be able to travel a long distance but after a test run I am not so sure it would be a good idea. For short distances with slower speeds it will work perfectly. During my test drive I found the foot holds would slip and tilt a bit in the higher winds. As far as the universal fit goes it does fit fairly well. I had to go farther into the door jam since the jam is a bit rounded and the clip would not hold if the door was open. If I were to keep it on for long periods of time I feel it could damage the weather stripping, but again for short trips (no more than 50 miles) it works well. One other downfall is there was no place to hook my straps. I had to go out and buy some rings to put though the screw holes to be able to secure the straps, so you may have to do some small modifications. Over all I feel this is a good buy for the price but if you want to be able to go long distances at faster speeds I would suggest a more permanent rack.
