"Thule new design Helium 970." 2009-08-09
By Vladimir Raykin (San Jose, CA)
I purchased Thule Helium 970 in July of 2009. I like the bike carrier because it is light and very convenient for every day use.

I just unsure about the rack anti - theft protection. You can't lock the receiver pin like on previous Thule models. And in locked position the Thule Stinger Swinger hitch knob will spin freely but you could easy release the hitch rotating the tighten bolt using a fine plumbing pliers at the open bolt space next to the knob.

I think the stinger assembly needs better anti - theft protection or Thule should design a lockable receiver pin for the model.

 "lock jammed" 2009-07-17
By A. castle (weston, fl)
It's a niece product, light and easy to operate. My lock jammed when i was on the road and I was unable to use my bikes. Called Customer service and the only advise the guy gave me, was to find a locksmith or cut the "security cable". Then he requested to send pictures of the broken cable so he can ship a replacement one. I ended up disassembling the carrier and taken apart the cable when I got home.

Other than that, I'll recommend the Helium carrier even the support pads ended up scratching the bike's frames.

 "Flimsy, doesn't install well" 2009-07-12
By S
I can't get this to install well on my rectangular Subaru roof rack. It rocks back and forth when it is installed. Then I can't un-install it. I have had a frustrating day dealing with this stupid thing, and NOT going kayaking. I am going to look into J-racks and probably end up spending another $300 on top of the $100 I wasted on this piece of junk.

 "Work exactly as advertised!" 2007-07-13

It's always a score when a product works as advertised. Buyers should be aware that putting kayaks on top of an SUV is a two person job with this style rack. The nylon ties are solid. Excellent product.

 "impressive." 2009-08-24

I am very pleased with the construction and the performance of this bike rack. I have a couple engineering degrees and appreciate the design and flexibility of the rack... nice powder coated pieces, good tie-down methods, cleaver eye-hook/threaded rod method of cinching the hitch, the ability to collapse the components for low-profile storing. from looking at competitors racks, you would have a difficult time finding a rack that holds you bike more secure. You do have an option of strapping the bikes to a lower bar that helps stabilize the bikes, but the rack works fine if you don't [though, i would recommend using it for longer trips]. the setup and take-down of the bikes can take 15 min, but they'll be safe. mfg over-seas, but quality seems quite good.

check out their website and you can download the manuals to get a better idea of how this thing works.

great product. built like a tank. rock solid on the hitch. still lets me open the tail-gate. robust design. would buy again.

feel free to ask me questions.

"10 years of great hauling!" 2009-06-19
By K. Moy (Long Beach, Ca United States)
I bought this rack at least 10 years ago, possibly 11 or 12. It has actually lasted longer than the Explorer I bought it for. I have it on a new Silverado now and it works like a champ. The release was originally appealing because the Explorer had the hatch style door and it allowed me to get into the cargo area without taking the bikes off. Now with the truck, I can still let down the bed gate and not have to take the bikes off the rack.

I have carried everything from mountain bikes to kids bikes to my big fat beach cruiser and it has had no problems with bowing or swaying.

Now the best part: I recently realized that I stripped one of the turn knobs that allows the bars to go up and down. I called customer service and they allowed me to drive over to their facility and pick up a replacement. How cool was that? A lot of these manufactures will not sell directly to the public, and they did with no problem. What's even better is; as I was standing out front putting on the part, the owner happened to come out to see if I needed help. He even gave me my money back stating stating that since I drove all the way over there and it was a little part, he wouldn't charge. I couldn't believe it! I tried to refuse, but he kept giving me back the payment! I was shocked!

The replacement part works great and I am a loyal customer for life. That type of service is unheard of these days. I was happy enough to just be able to get the part immediately. I know this rack will last another ten years, and hopefully I will be able to get other items from this company.

"Very secure and easy to use." 2008-09-30
By J. Lents (Daytona Beach, FL)
This is the first time we have ever transported bikes on our car and had asked several people which rack would be the best. After pricing this rack at a local bike shop and talking to the clerk we went on line and made the purchase and saved $40.00. The instructions could have been written clearer with pictures of the rack on different cars instead of pictures of people riding bikes. We had to tighten the straps a little at our first stop and checked them every time we made a stop but they went over 1,000 miles without a wobble. This rack worked great. You couldn't tell the bikes were on the car. Great price for a great product. We also purchased the bar to adapt the womens bike to fit the rack and it worked very well.

 "Great Bike Rack" 2008-08-20
By School Counselor (NY United States)
This was a great bike rack, be aware however that it is really designed for 4 adult bikes. With some creative positioning we are able to include my children's' bikes so it is possible.

We traveled 5 hours each way with the bikes and had no problems. There was very little movement and sway while driving with the bikes on the rack.

 "Capable and Easy!" 2008-07-01
By AF Family (Monterey, CA)
I had never used a hitch mounted bike rack, but bought the Hollywood HR400 on a recomendation from a friend. From taking it out of the box to having bikes on and ready to drive out of the driveway was less than an hour. The design makes the bikes stable, and easy to get on and off. The fold down arm gives good access to the back section of the vehicle, but watch out if you have 4 bikes on there, it tends to get heavy pushing it back into the driving position. If I had to, I'd buy the same product again!!

"Thule881 Top Deck kayak rack" 2009-05-04
By David A. Reed (massapequa,NY)
easy to install, very sturdy, no worries of them loosening their grip on the luggage rack or my kayak. Only concern is that the angle the pads face is fixed, if it was maybe slightly adjustable they would be perfect, while they do fit my kayak pretty well I could see where some kayaks would pose a problem and leave plenty of open space against the pads.

"Thule 881's work quite well" 2006-07-05
By Kent (Mount Jackson, VA USA)
I've used the Thule 881 with tie downs about a half dozen times now and have no complaints. I have the rails mounted on top of my Wrangler, and the 881s on top of that, so my kayak is pretty high. To get it up I set the nose on top of the back of the Jeep top, then grab the rear T handle on my kayak. It's a simple matter to get it slid into place from there. I'm a little concerned that the rest pads of the 881 will break because I bend them some when mounting like this, but so far they are holding up.

"Sturdy rack with tight space for 3 bikes" 2009-07-31
By David Panadero Ortiz (Mountain View, CA)
Pro:

sturdy, tilt functionality to access the trunk when rack is mounted

Con:

might be difficult to mount some bikes on it

This rack is easy to assemble and works great on my Ford Explorer XLT 2" hitch. I can open the trunk glass door of my car while this rack is on when I tilt it, which is very convenient. It will accommodate 3 bikes if all of them have a bar going from the upper seat bar to the handle bar like it is common on most road bikes. If you have bikes with a lowered or w/o such a bar like on some women bikes it might be a challenge to get 3 bikes on this rack or find a good position at all even for one single bike. Try it out before you buy it. If you use this rack don't forget to secure your front handle bar. I did that and the cable of my bike computer broke due to tension when the handle bar turned around while driving....

"Great Trailer Rack-with a couple of issues" 2009-06-12
By Bruce J. Heine (Deale, MD)
Ordered the Deluxe 3 bike rack from Niagara Bike Shop; arrived on time and in great condition. Used on a 5 day road trip through the Catskills in NY; dirt roads as well as freeway. No issues at all. Only problem was that the retaining pin and associated holes in the tang of the rack were considerably smaller than the pin hole on the 1 1/4" hitch receiver on my Volvo. I had to drill out the hole on the rack so the larger pin would work. The result was that there were no issues with the rack moving or vibrating. Solid fit, no problem. Good quality construction, would buy another.

"Easy to install and sturdy, some rust" 2009-06-03
By Fredrik Andersson (The United States of America)
We had this rack for about 2 months. Installation on our Jeep was easy and we have used it 5-6 times with two bikes. I usually add an additional bungee cord to make sure wheels etc are fixed and does not move around when driving.

I did notice some rust developing after it having been exposed to rain a few times so I will add some rust protectant.

But overall very happy, we have not had any trouble with this unit and it was worth the money for sure.

 "Best Bike Rack" 2009-05-31
By L. A. Kettell (Cape Cod, MA)
We purchased the bike rack to put on my husbands truck so we could take our bikes to the Cape Cod Canal (which we live near) to bike on week nights after work.

The rack was very easy to install. It only took him about a half hour to get it on. We have used it for a month now and have had no problems at all with it. It is very sturdy and easy to get the bikes on and off. The straps are strong and simple to use. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a muliple bike rack.

"Allen customer Service dropped the ball..." 2009-05-24
By Michael A. Dorfman (Sarasota, FL)
I received the Allen bike rack in April and after assembling the rack and attaching to my new hitch I realized there was far too much play in the vertical post that carries the bikes. Without bicycles the vertical post wobbles as I drive - enough to hear it banging back and forth in city driving - country roads would drive you crazy! (With the bikes mounted the additional weight reduces the post's movement.) I contacted Allen Racks, they suggested tightening all bolts which I did. Still lots of movement so I emailed a picture showing the range of vertical positions front to back. Here is the service person's response to the picture : "Wow - something definitely doesn't look correct here. Can you please provide your shipping address?"

On April 29th I requested a new rack, at least the two parts not fitting well together. I've never received those parts and a reminder to that clerk hasn't brought any results other than, "These will ship today. Sorry for the delay." emailed may 13th. No items have been received at this time (late May).

I automatically shop thru Amazon because of their support and the usual integrity of their suppliers. Well, beware as Allen Rack's service might be a problem if you find, as I did, a need for parts. By the way, email and phone responses have been adequate. And other than the vertical post over play and wobble the rack is a pleasure to use.
