 "'04 Honda Civic SI (hatchback) - Thule 962XT Speedway 3-Bike" 2009-09-14
By J. Correa (Missoula, MT)
This is an excellent bike rack but the hatchback design for the newer hatchback SI leaves some improvements to be desired for the trunk mount. The top and bottom hooks are secure but the ones mounted near the rear brake lights (as shown in the Thule example) seem to slide down as the car hits bumps in the road. This loosens the mount and it begins to bounce more as you ride. There are no sharp corners to adequately hold the side hooks so I am looking to add something (tape or closed cell foam) to prevent slipping. Secondly, my mountain bike design does not fit well on the rack. I have to rest the rear suspension spring on the bike rack arm so the weight is not evenly distributed. This could be another element causing the side hooks to slip. Either way, it's an excellent bike rack aside from the design issues with my hatchback Civic SI and Iron Horse mountain bike.

 "World Class Bike Rack" 2009-09-12
By Robert Gray (Mississippi USA)
I go to a lot of big road bike events and ride road bikes several thousand miles a year. I looked at a lot of other racks at events and talked to the people were using them. This is one of the the most sturdy, stable and well detailed racks available. The robust rubber stays and guides keep the bikes securely positioned and protected. If you are going to put very expensive road bikes on a car rack, you can afford the best rack.

I purchased this rack for my daughter's Hyundai Santa Fe. The quality is excellent and fit well on the Santa Fe. She said that it performed well, holding the bike securely while moving to Boston from Alabama. After seeing the quality of this product I plan to purchase another one for use on my Toyota Prius.

No problem in using it. Easy to install in general. In the beginning I bought the roof type of rack but it turned out difficult for me to put the bike on. This one is pretty convenient for occasional (weekends) trip.

"Does it fit or not???" 2009-06-13
By Randy (Decatur, IL USA)
OK - So I'm researching about buying this bike rack. I just happen to own an Audi A4 Wagon and the picture on the listing here at Amazon and other sites actually show the rack mounted to an A4 wagon. But when you look at the installation directions for the rack it says that you shouldn't use the rack on an A4 wagon because there's no safe place to secure the top straps. What??????

"Best value & feature hitch bike rack" 2009-08-18
By JK
If you are looking for a hitch bike rack, this is the one to get.

It's very sturdy for a folding-featured hitch rack, meaning the arms fold down and the entire rack folds out for easy trunk access. It's heavy, but it's only because it's pretty much all steel. Again very sturdy, and anything lighter and as sturdy would cost a lot more (like the Thule's helium models). The two folding joints are very solid, and feels like they won't move once they're "clicked" into place (down or up).

It comes with locks for the rack and the bikes themselves, which are accessible with the same key (very convenient). You cannot lock the bikes in place without the key, so you'll won't forget your lock key. The rack also comes with the anti-sway straps, which works exceptionally well.

If you are to buy all those separately from Thule, you'll pay much more than the Ridgeline. Even comparing other brand/models, it made sense to buy the ridgeline model.

Other's have noted that the bike locks can come off and drag. Well, unless the locks break off, which is highly unlikely, they will not drag. When there's no bike loaded on the rack, and the arms fold down, the bike locks "can" drag off. But if you're that worried, just pull them out and lock them in place, and you're done.

I've read from another review that the hitch lock is a joke, and can easily be broken off with a hammer or something like that. Well, that's absolutely true. But unless you weld your rack to the hitch, there will always be a way for a willing person to brake a lock. Any $20 bolt cutter will cut most chains & locks, and any any $20 portable drill will drill through the toughest key pad lock, etc, etc etc. My point is, the Thule lock system is as good as any bike rack will get, and it's very convenient.

If I had to, I can complain about the fact that the paint on the rack can easily scratch, especially on the 2 folding joints. So if you have moisture on the scratched area, expect some rust. However any can lubricant will cause any further serious rust damage. Also, since it is a folding rack (and has joints), the rack will bounce from front to back, and may be side to side a little bit. That's normal, and if you have more bikes on the rack it will bounce more. It may appear to be loose, but it's not. If you don't believe me, just mount the rack, and jump a little on the rack joint. The entire car will bounce before the joint gives.

Finally, it says Sweden everywhere, but it's made in USA. Gotta love that one.

Again, I could not find a better value and set of features than this one, and I've looked at several others at nearby stores. Hope it works out for you.

"Good Overall....but some basic design flaws...!" 2009-07-27
By T. L. Allred (Los Angeles, CA)
This is a sturdy and functional hitch mount bike rack but I have found some really basic design flaws that causes me to rate this product with only 3 Stars.

** the 2 inch (combo) hitch mount is very sloppy in the receiver of my factory 2007 Yukon XL. The rack sways and bounces around like its about to fall off my truck. Very poor fit on the 1-1/4 inch / 2 inch combo hitch mount.

** the hitch pin is under sized for a 2 inch hitch mount. Sure the pin threads are sized correctly, but the portion of the pin that extends through the pin hole to the lock is undersized and adds considerably to loose rack fit and sway. The pin is also too long and allows the pin threads to back out unless tightened down with a wrench. Luckily, the pin lock keeps the pin from completely falling out and allowing my 4 bikes to crash on the pavement at 70 mph!

How could Thule make such basic fitting errors after building a good, a heavy duty bike rack that is otherwise well engineered?

 "Solid, functional rack" 2009-06-22
By RJL (Texas)
This rack works perfectly on our RV. It folds down easily when not in use. We were able to put two adult and two kid bikes on the rack with no trouble. The hitch bolt locks on, and there is a security cable hidden in one of the tubes. You just pull it out and lock your bikes. Great feature! Very sturdy and convenient. Highly recommended!

 "Buy the Roadway" 2009-05-03
By Jordan M. Berkley (Cary, NC USA)
Buy the Roadway, it's the exact same rack sans the hitchlock, No Sway Cages, and the built-in securty lock. These extras are not worth the money so buy the basic rack. Here's the deal:

1. Sure, you can secure the hitch pin (mediocre anyway). But, you can remove the upright by loosening two nuts and removing the two bolts.

2. The No Sway cages appear to work. But, you'll need to strap the front wheel down or it will bound around. So, use a synch strap through the wheels and the hitch, and no more sway! Even with the No Sway cages, you'll have to do this.

3. The integrated lock is kind of nice. But, it's not really long enough to go through the front wheel. So, if you want to secure your front wheel, you'll need another cable lock anyway. So, just buy a cable lock that can go through the wheels, frame, and hitch and your golden.

Save your money.

 "Yakima Bike Rack" 2009-08-09
By K. Schneider
Good product. Used this to transport two bikes. Easy to install and remove the the back of my SUV. This bikes are secure enough after you place them on the rack so that they do not move around and sway when the vehicle is moving. This keep the bikes from rubbing together and saves them from being scratched. The only drawback is that the bike rack is manufactured in China so the quality is just okay. When I received mine is was missing a part.

 "Awesome rack!!!" 2009-06-12
By R. Clark (GR, MI)
When you use buy a rack, there are couple of things you want. Ease of installation, confidence in support during your trip and affordable. This product meets and exceeds those requirements. This is the best alternative to a hitch mount. We purchased this rack for my wife's 2006 Ford Freestyle and have not been disappointed. I didn't want to have a hitch installed, so this rack was perfect. After owning 2-3 racks, I can say with confidence, that his makes the others look cheap. This rack is extremely durable and extremely easy to use. I recommend it to everyone.

 "Monster Headache" 2009-06-08
By Biff Bechenschnifter (College Park, MD United States)
I purchased this rack in March 2009 to use on a Honda CRV. In May, Yakima issued a recall, saying that the rack's top straps tended to fail "when one or more bicycles are mounted on the rack", which could cause "injury or property damage." I registered on the Yakima website for their recall plan. After two weeks of waiting for the return envelope (a postage paid envelope to return significant parts from the rack), I called Yakima and asked about the delay. The rep apologized for the delay and told me that the envelopes were only mailed once weekly, but the replacement racks would be shipped "immediately." Today (almost three weeks after registration, the envelope arrived with a letter stating that I "should" receive the replacement rack with 4-6 weeks. So what this amounts to is that Yakima made a load of faulty racks and anyone who purchased one will have to forget about taking their bike on their car for 2 or 3 months (most of the summer). Lousy service.

"Bike Rack for 5 Series BMW Touring (Wagons)..We have a WINNER!" 2009-05-29
By Noth Carolina (Charlotte, NC USA)
This seems to be a really good, stable functional trunk-mount bike rack for an '06 BMW 530xi wagon. I tried the Saris Bones RS3 model and it was too awkward trying to get the hard-mounted lower tabs to fit on the lift gate. The Yakima works because all the mounting points are on straps. I used the glass hatchback adapters that are included so I can still open the lift gate without removing the rack. But I cannot lift the glass with it on. However, I rarely use that feature anyway. I did not have to use the lower tabs to mount this rack. The 4 strap-mounted tabs (top and sides)coupled with the lower feet nestling up against the license plate lip was plenty stable! All in all, pretty slick. I have had 2 bikes on it around town and plan a highway road trip with two bikes later this month. I will share my findings upon my return. Can't give it 5 stars as the rear wiper cannot be used with this installed.

"First rack that does it all!" 2009-05-25
By David Kennedy
2003 VW Jetta

This rack fit all the requirements that I wanted and then some. I am extremely picky and had searched and searched for a rack that not only looked good but was easy to use and performed well. I had tried the Saris Bones 3 that many people seemed to like but ended up taking it back. It was clunky to use in my opinion and just not that great of a rack. The Yakima Quickback looks great, super easy to install, and functions perfectly. It also has something I had not been able to find in previous racks....a cable that locks the rack to your trunk. Finally! And strangely enough also comes with bottle openers at the end of each arm. :) Enjoy.

 "Great, affordable, EZ" 2009-08-17
By M. Church (Norfolk, Va)
This rack works great, I use it on my Cadillac sedan at highway speeds so I can vouch for it's safety/rigidity . The install was pretty straight forward with the straps being labeled, and each dock that touches the vehicle is wrapped in non-abrasive foam so that you wont scratch your car or truck. Also the holsters for each bike uses heavy duty velcro so that it fits a variety of frame styles. For example my bike is a Mongoose Snare ([...]) with a pretty 'original' skeleton which I managed to secure with a bit of convincing. I'd definitely recommend this to a friend or family member 5stars!!

 "It does the job" 2009-05-29
By Miguel M. Demartini (Miami, FL)
This is the first bike rack I own, so I can't compare to others, but the design of the straps is not exactly the best design to secure and adjust to support the weight of 3 adult mountain bikes. It is easy to mount and I like the security lock. I purchased an additional cargo strap to ensure it secures the rack properly to the vehicle and can handle the weight on bumpy roads. It probably won't need that with lighter race bikes or children bikes.

 "Just what I expected" 2008-10-30
By C.Brown (Hollis, NH United States)
For the amount I paid for this, I wasn't expecting a perfectly crafted high-end bike rack. I have a Toyota Matrix, fitting to the back hatch is a little tricky, but it is perfect for what I need/expected. I would be nervous putting more than 2 bikes on it, the straps seem to loosen up pretty easily (again, not high end), and I find myself tightening them every day (whether we've had bikes on the rack or not). I have had it on my car continuously for 3 weeks now, and it has made toting around my teenager's BMX bike much more pleasant (and the dog appreciates having the back seat to himself!)

 "Holds the bikes" 2008-09-25
By Yoga Yudi (Michigan)
No problem with this. It holds up the bikes. But the funny thing is that it comes with a lock and cable so that you can lock the bike to it. But it easily removes from the back of the car (I keep it in the trunk until I need it) so the lock is kind of useless.

 "Defective Rack" 2008-09-14
By Brian Petula (Factoryville, PA United States)
I'm using this rack because its not worth the hassle of trying to return it to Target. Perhaps the rack would be worth 5 stars if didn't come with a manufacturer's defect. I had to bend the metal plates open so that they could receieve and lock the arms in place. I still don't have a perfect fit and worry about the arms giving out. So far it is holding one bike up very well but with my next purchase I'll go inspect the rack before purchasing.

 "Great Bike Rack" 2009-06-18
By Z. Reasoner (Noblesville, IN)
Bought this rack on Monday and it got here on Tuesday. Took about 30-45 minutes to put it all together. Once I figured out that I had to take some parts apart to put them back together on the rack base, it all went well. I love how the bikes mount and feel that the bikes are more secure than on the type of racks that the bikes hang from the top tube. I would defiantly recommend this bike rack.

"Bulky, but I love it!" 2009-06-11
By JohnC (Harrisburg, PA)
Have owned this rack for about a year and use it on the back of my Honda Odyssey. I love the platform loading sytle and the ease of securing the bike to the rack with the ratchet-down arm. Bikes seem very secure and don't move. However, this is a heavy rack and really protrudes from the back of the vehicle. I have no problem installing or removing the rack from the vehicle myself but keep it stored in the garage for ease of access. It was delivered quickly and, in my opinion, was reasonably priced for what I got.

"Heavy Duty, easy to get bikes in & out" 2009-05-29
By Charles R. Ringhofer (Twin Cities, Minnesota)
After a lot of research I settled on this rack. I was pleased with the construction quality, heavy but solid. The bikes are easier to load and unload then our old rack. The bikes are a lot more stable now, they can't hit each other. We are using this on the back of a travel trailer, which is hard on rack with the extra bouncing. Time will tell, so far so good - 3.5 hours each way last weekend.

Love our State Parks in Minnesota!!!!

The rack arrived quickly as promised and in good order. Although I had read that it was hard to assemble I thought it went together easily. It is heavy, but that is to be expected. It holds my bike securely and folds up with ease. I have not yet tried it with 4 bikes though and have heard the middle to bikes have clearance issues. If it is a problem I will add an addendum to this post.

Very well made and solid (heavy). Not the sort of rack you would want to pull on and of your vehicle by yourself very often. If you want a rack where you don't worry about your bikes swinging in the breeze this is it. The rack does fold up so it doesn't stick out the back too badly when the bikes aren't on. The receiver pin tightens to take out the slop between the hitch and the rack.
